SALT LAKE CITY — As part of the parish Eucharistic Revival efforts in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, the Cathedral of the Madeleine will host a speaker whose presentation will supplement the video series “Jesus and the Eucharist,” which the cathedral offered during Lent.

“In recognition that the Cathedral of the Madeleine is the mother church to the diocese, we wanted to do something special and invite a dynamic speaker whose interest was focused on the Eucharist,” said Jacque Smithe, a parishioner who is helping to organize the event.

Father Roch Mary Greiner, CFR, a member of the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, will present “Becoming Eucharistified: A Biblical, Theological and Practical Explanation” on May 7.  The talk will provide answers to questions such as, What is the Sacrament of the Eucharist? What is Transubstantiation? What is the True Presence? What is Eucharistic Adoration and why do we do it? His explanations will have a basis in the Bible, theology and practicality, according to a summary of the talk he sent.

“Our hope is that this [presentation] will inspire and increase the love we all have for the Eucharist,” Smithe said.

Fr.  Roch, is originally from Orange County, Calif. but currently is assigned to St. Juan Diego Friary in Albuquerque, N.M. Before his ordination in 2017, he was a lay minister in juvenile hall jail ministry and was very involved in the Charismatic Renewal.

According to his biography, Fr. Roch has “a deep love and appreciation for the Word of God and uses that as his platform for preaching and ministry. ... He also has a deep love for God’s beauty in creation and loves to enjoy in his spare time hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and praying in solitude.”

The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal is a religious order that “is popular among the young and old alike, so we thought [Fr. Roch] would draw a diverse set of listeners,” Smithe said.

The presentation will  include a “thought-provoking lecture,” a Eucharistic procession, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with songs such as “O Saving Victim,” “Tantum ergo” and the “Divine Praises” led by a cantor, so “this will provide an opportunity for us to pray and increase our faith in the Eucharist together as a community,” said Smithe, who hopes that all the people who attend the presentation “will fall in love more deeply with Christ as present in the Eucharist. We anticipate an environment of joy and peace, which will fill people’s hearts with God’s love.

Although all are welcome to attend the presentation, Smithe said that “it may be more suited to high school/college ages and older.”
