On Dec. 19, their prayers were answered when Pope Benedict XVI approved miracles attributed to the intercession of Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be beatified. Blessed Kateri’s mother was Algonquin; her father was a Mohawk Indian. She was born in 1656 in upstate New York. Against the wishes of her family, she was baptized by a Jesuit missionary when she was 20. She died four years later, in Canada.
