SALT LAKE CITY — Irene Cecelia Sweeney, a member of the Cathedral of the Madeleine Parish who had a cathedral bell named in her honor, died June 23. She had been a cathedral parishioner for more than 50 years. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, presided at the June 28 funeral Mass.

>>>CEDAR CITY — Four Catholic High School girls from the Diocese of Salt Lake City were among 300 gathered at Southern Utah University in Cedar City to attend Girls’ State June 6-11. Girls’ State is a week-long summer program run by the American Legion Auxiliary that offers citizenship and leadership training for girls who are between their junior and senior years in high school.

>>>HURRICANE — When Saint Paul Catholic Center in Hurricane was dedicated in 2009, about 30 people regularly attended the biweekly Sunday services. Now, two years later, more than 100 people celebrate during the biweekly Masses. The center also boasts three Sunday Celebrations Absent a Priest (SCAP), a weekly holy hour, a women’s club and a Knights of Columbus council. The center recently celebrated its first baptism and funeral Mass, and held Stations of the Cross during Lent.
