Real is the promotora director for Holy Cross Ministries. Real received the Peace on Earth Courage Award from the Salt Lake Domestic Violence Coalition Oct. 25.

St. Vincent seventh-graders read, make a big difference

HOLLADAY — "I bet you can’t" was the challenge from seventh grade teacher Deborah Ferree that launched a reading marathon at Holladay’s St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School. Coupled with the Scholastic Book Club, seventh-graders turned off the TV and put away the PlayStations to read over 100 books in only four weeks as part of Scholastic’s Classroom Cares Program. "Success at reaching the 100-book milestone triggers a donation by Scholastic Books," explains Ferree. In honor of my student’s achievement, Scholastic will donate 100 books to low-income families. "There is a real sense of empowerment among the students knowing they are giving the joy of reading to children in need" said Ferree.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, an organization that works to safeguard both the religious freedom rights and the free speech rights of Catholics whenever and wherever they are threatened, has been all aflutter with the release of "The Golden Compass," a film adaptation of Philip Pullman’s first book of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Pullman is an avowed atheist who, I understand, has said he wants to bring about "the downfall of the Catholic Church."
