Frances Mary Elllis died Oct. 22, 2015 due to causes incident to age.
Ellis was born Oct. 22, 1920. A bright shining light and irrepressible smile were extinguished when she passed away on her on her 95th birthday, which surprised no one.

On Thursday, in his homily at the Mass celebrated during the seniors’ retreat, Dominican Father Wayne Cavalier said the only thing that comes between us and God’s love is ourselves. Later, as I sat with this idea in prayer, my thoughts came to rest on an area of my life that I’m not happy about, but I haven’t asked God for assistance because it has nothing to do with my salvation.

Mercy was on the minds of those who gathered for two retreats Oct. 29 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish.
The five-hour retreat for seniors included celebration of Mass and lunch. It drew 120 people, which “says an awful lot about the people who have a great love for the Church, and a great mission to pass it on to their children and grandchildren,” said Susan Northway, director of the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Office of Religious Education, who organized the events.

I was taken aback recently when a sixth-grader from our parish school told me as he left the church with his classmates after a school Mass that he thought the Mass that day was “fun.” I tried to interpret this in benign terms, thinking that the young man’s liturgical vocabulary was still underdeveloped. Yet, I still wince at the thought that Mass is “fun.”
