The Spanish-speaking lay ecclesial ministry formation program, known as EMAUS, has begun, bringing 68 Catholics from all over the Diocese of Salt Lake City at least one weekend a month to future develop their faith. They are expected to be certified in 2019.

The first thing I noticed when I left home Tuesday morning was the stars. In the cloudless sky overhead, Orion and Taurus were locked in their eternal battle. I am always pleased to see them; they are the only constellations outside of the Big Dipper and the Pleiades that I recognize.
I used to walk frequently under the stars, but it’s been years now, and as I made my way to the TRAX station on Tuesday I realized how much I miss those solitary strolls, when I saw and thought things not common in the light of day.

Since 1972 a Hispanic/Latino ministry known as ENAHVE has been taking place all over the United States. It is comprised of 17 national and regional Catholic organizations that serve the Hispanic community; members include Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller of San Antonio, several other bishops and priests and a large number of laypeople.

As Catholic Community Services of Utah celebrates its 70th year of “providing help, creating hope” for the poor, the hungry, the homeless, immigrants and refugees, and people struggling with addictions, they will pause Nov. 5 for an awards dinner to honor some of those who have contributed significantly to the organization’s mission.

Diocese of Salt Lake City priests celebrate Mass Oct. 7 during the fall clergy convocation at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Park City. During the week-long convocation, which is for ongoing formation, the presenters were Father Charlie Mitchell and Deacon Tom Tosti. Fr. Mitchell, pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Altamonte Springs, Fla., spoke on stewardship. Deacon Tosti’s presentation was on “The Speed of Trust.”

The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul Saint Mary Magdalene Conference, working in the Diocese of Salt Lake City through the Cathedral of the Madeleine’s Good Samaritan Program, held its first Friends of the Poor 5K Walk/Run at Sugar House Park Oct. 3 in conjunction with the national St. Vincent De Paul FOP walk/run. The proceeds will be used to assist local people living in poverty. The winners of the 5K were Angello Gazani, first place; Rene Valerio, second place; and Lola Hunter, 6, third place, with her father in fourth running behind her to ensure her safety. The Utah conference, which has 30 members, is bilingual and open to all people regardless of religious affiliation. Donations can be made online until Oct. 30 at www.svdpusa.net/walk/1420.
