Eighth-grader wins awards

SALT LAKE CITY – Lindy Hughes, an eighth-grader at J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School, has been busy this year. She has been preparing for graduation, getting ready to enter high school, and winning awards.

In March, Lindy was selected to represent the state of Utah at the national Letters about Literature competition. She won first place in the middle school division with her letter to the author of The Book Thief. If selected as a national winner, Lindy will receive a $500 Target Gift Card and $10,000 Reading Promotion Grant for Cosgriff’s library.

Lindy’s other accomplishments this year include receiving first place in the eighth grade Earth Science category, Overall Earth Science award, Overall Eighth Grade award, and 2008 Young Scientist of the Year award at the Diocesan Science Fair. At the State science fair Lindy took second place in the Earth and Planetary Science category and received special awards from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Association for Women Geoscientists. Lindy is also a member of Cosgriff’s new mock trial team. Lindy is the daughter of Brent and Jennifer Hughes.

J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School is a pre-k through eighth grade school founded in 1957. Cosgriff guides its students to become respectful, responsible, and productive citizens through quality academic instruction that is grounded in Catholic teachings and tradition.
