Retreats, Prayer and Worship

Diocesan Advent Retreat — Saturday, Dec. 2 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 300 East 11800 South, Draper. The English session will be 8:30-11 a.m., followed by a bilingual liturgy from  11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Spanish session will follow from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The presenter for the English session will be Fr. Joseph Delka, parochial vicar of St. Joseph Parish, Ogden. The presenter for the Spanish session will be Fr. Christopher Gray, parochial vicar of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Vigil Night of Prayer — with prayer traditions of both the Christian West and East, Rome and Byzantium. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the prayer of the psalms, meditation on ancient Advent readings, and the 6th-century Byzantine chant “Akathist.” Saturday, Dec. 2, 7-9 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Newman Center, 170 S. University St., SLC.

First Sunday of Advent — is Sunday, Dec. 3. Check your parish for Mass times.

Advent Adoration and Prayer — Monday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Newman Center, 170 S. University St., SLC.

Young Adult Advent Reflection — with Bishop Oscar A. Solis. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 6:15-8:15 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. For information, contact Junuee Castro, junuee.castro@dioslc.org or 801-328-8641 ext. 313.

Simbang Gabi Novena — begins Friday, Dec. 15, 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. Bishop Solis will preside.

Las Posadas Novena — begins Saturday, Dec. 16, 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. Bishop Solis will preside.

The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord — Monday, Dec. 25, is a holy day of obligation. Check your parish for Mass times.

Penance Services

Monday, Dec. 4: 7 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Parish, 4914 South 2200 West, Taylorsville. Four priests will be available to hear Confession in English, Spanish and Polish.

Tuesday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m. at the following locations:

• Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. Bishop Oscar A. Solis and six other priests will be available to hear confession in English, Spanish and Tagalog.

• St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Newman Center, 170 S. University St., SLC.

• St. John the Baptist Parish, 11800 South 300 East, Draper. There will be a communal prayer service followed by individual Reconciliation. Several priests will be available.

• St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 7405 S. Redwood Road, West Jordan. A short service will be held, then nine priests will be available to hear individual confessions in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Wednesday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m. at St. Andrew Parish, 11835 South 3600 West, Riverton. Priests will be available to hear confession in English and Spanish.

Music and Entertainment

Christmas Concert — presented by Weber State University Alumni Choir. Monday, Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1100 East 5550 South, Ogden. 

Winter Music Concert — Friday, Dec. 8, 7 p.m. in the Judge Memorial CHS auditorium, 650 South 1100 East, SLC. Performances by the Judge Memorial Dance Company, which includes junior and senior student performers. Tickets: $5/person; available at the door 30 minutes before the performance.

A Christmas Story — “The Star of Bethlehem” (“Pastorela La Estrella de Belén”), a bilingual play, will be presented 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Centro Civico Mexicano, 155 South 600 West, SLC. Free and open to all.

Interfaith Concert — Sunday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 1793 Orchard Drive, Bountiful. With members of Good Shepherd Lutheran, Church of the Resurrection, Lamb of God Chorus, St. Olaf Parish, Bountiful LDS Stakes, and Bountiful Community Church.

Christmas Social — for the 49ers Club of St. Ambrose Parish. Wednesday, Dec. 13 at the parish’s social hall, 1975 South 2300 East, SLC. Bring raffle items for fundraising activities. Christmas Carol Service — Monday, Dec. 18 and Tuesday, Dec. 19, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 909 E. South Temple, SLC. Presented by the Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Free and open to the public.

A Ceremony of Carols — Thursday, Dec. 21 and Friday, Dec. 22, 12:15 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. Presented by the Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Free and open to the public.

Christmas Carol Service — Sunday, Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 909 E. South Temple, SLC. Presented by the Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Free and open to the public.
