SALT LAKE CITY— A delegation from the Diocese of Salt Lake City for World Youth Day 2019 in Panama is in the planning stages.

Pilgrims will leave Salt Lake City on Jan. 21 and return Jan. 29. During their time in Panama, they will participate in several WYD activities, including catechetical sessions and papal Masses.

An informational session about the trip is planned for April 12 at the diocesan Pastoral Center.

“During this session, we will offer a brief explanation of the meaning of a World Youth Day,” as well as information about the itinerary, costs and fundraising ideas, said Junuee Castro, director of the Diocese of Salt Lake City  Youth and Young Adult Ministry, who is organizing the delegation.

They also will “share a bit of information about Panama, motivating all the young adults to come with us,” she said.

Bishop Oscar A. Solis will accompany the diocesan delegation.

World Youth Day, of which there have been 12 since its inception in 1984,  is “a special call in which youth from all over the world gather to be Church and to live a communal encounter with them and with God,” Castro said.

As participants of WYD 2019, the youth can also expect “to experience catechetical sessions with bishops from all over the world, Eucharistic Adoration, attend a Mass with Pope Francis, a cruise through Panama Canal, get to know Catholic youth from all over the world and strengthen the faith through an spiritual experience, among many other things,” Castro said.
