On Ash Wednesday, the Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, celebrated Mass at the Skaggs Catholic Center in Draper. “The Church says Lent is a joyful season, so even though we are doing penance we are filled with joy because we are joining with our Lord in the desert, so to speak, as we prepare to celebrate his suffering, death and resurrection,” the bishop said. He added that many people, himself included, are running through life, ignoring others and being insensitive to their needs, but Lent is a time to slow down and to reflect, to ask, “How am I doing in terms of my relationship with God with others?” He suggested that a good practice would be to take a few minutes each day to ask the Lord for help in coming closer to him during Lent, and then listening to Jesus’ reply. He also recommended saying one nice thing to someone each day.
