Bishop of Salt Lake City

Dear Graduates of 2023,

Greetings of Christ’s peace and congratulations on your graduation! I join you in celebrating this milestone in your life, which is a great achievement worth remembering together with your parents, family members, classmates, friends and your school community as well.

Your graduation is worthy of commendation and celebration. It recalls all the hurdles you have overcome, the sacrifices and pains you have gone through, as well as your failures and triumphs which, put together, create a kaleidoscope of beautiful memories. These are all God’s blessings.

Blessings in life are meant to be enjoyed and also shared. So, focus not only on what you have achieved but also the impact this has had and its contribution to the common good. What we have become and how we made a difference in the lives of others, helping build a better humanity, is the innate spiritual value of life’s success.

As you leave the portals of your school to continue the pursuit of your dreams and aspirations, use your blessings generously. God sends you forth equipped with the Christian values imprinted in your mind and heart to be a catalyst of change and a protagonist of transforming this world into a better place. Be witnesses of Christ’s love and truth, not of hatred and fake news, and be beacons of hope and unity in our society.

I join you in thanking God and all those people who helped you make your graduation a reality, especially your parents and all your mentors who led you along the path of not only acquiring the necessary grades but also learning to live life fully and meaningfully.

You are in my prayers, and I hope you keep your faith in God and make prayer, too, a part of your life’s journey. St. Augustine said, “Pray as though everything depends on God and work as though everything depends on you.” Now, shoot for the stars, and wishes of more of God’s blessings!
