Bishop of Salt Lake City

Dear friends in Christ,

This year is a special one for the Intermountain Catholic. Our diocesan newspaper is celebrating 125 years of bringing news of the Church to the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

The first issue published on Oct. 7, 1899; since then, the Intermountain Catholic has continued to provide coverage of pastoral activities and events throughout Utah, as well as information about the Church in the United States and the world. Our diocesan newspaper also offers resources for faith formation and inspiring stories of local Catholics living their faith.

In addition to carrying on the tradition of print journalism, our newspaper has changed with the times. In 2001 the Intermountain Catholic website was inaugurated, and in 2010, it established its Facebook page and X (formerly Twitter) feed.

The Intermountain Catholic publishes 47 issues a year, which is weekly except in July and August, when it comes out every other week. It reaches Catholics and non-Catholics throughout our state and beyond, helping with our mission of evangelization, of sharing the Good News, and providing us a way to tell the story of the Catholic Church in Utah. Furthermore, it connects our diocese with the faithful and with each other while promoting and enhancing the spirit of unity that builds our communion as the Body of Christ.

For 125 years the Intermountain Catholic has told the story of the Catholic Church in Utah – its successes, failures, joys and sorrows. For example, beginning in the 1920s and continuing for years, Father Duane G. Hunt used its pages to write regularly about the faith; he would go on to be ordained the fifth Bishop of Salt Lake. The closures of the Catholic schools in Price and Provo and Saint Mary of the Wasatch were reported, as was the sale of the Catholic hospitals in the state. Our newspaper also celebrated events such as the 1976 bicentennial, which for local Catholics culminated in a Mass at the Salt Palace attended by more than 13,000 people.

This emphasis on the news of our local Church continues. This year, I am particularly proud of the wide-ranging coverage the Intermountain Catholic gave to the local activities associated with the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, as well as the outreach it offered to publicize our Utah Catholic Conference. In the coming weeks, it will publish stories about one of our seminarians, Kenneth Parsad, who will be ordained a deacon as he continues his journey toward the priesthood; and about SEEK25, a national conference that our diocese will host in January that is expected to bring approximately 18,000 Catholics to Salt Lake City.

I encourage all our parishioners to help us continue this legacy by subscribing to the Intermountain Catholic. You also may donate a subscription on behalf of your parish or give to your family and friends who could benefit by staying connected with their Catholic roots. Enclosed in this issue is a subscription card. The price for 47 issues is $30. Please fill out the card, use the QR code or visit https://icatholic.dioslc.org/subscription, or call 801-328-8641 ext. 356.

Your financial support of the Intermountain Catholic is significant to our diocese as we carry out our mission of evangelization. Please help us make it available to every parishioner, every family member and business establishments, schools, homes and people who rely on Church information and news.

Grateful for your generous support and wishes of God’s blessings for you and your loved ones, I remain

Yours truly in Christ,

Most Rev. Oscar A. Solis, D.D.
