On Dec. 5, the halls of St. Francis Xavier School were buzzing with excitement. Sunday, Dec. 3, had marked the feast of St. Francis Xavier, which started “Feast Week,” five days featuring daily prayer, trivia and excitement about the school’s patron. On Tuesday, in honor of that patron, Bishop Oscar A. Solis visited the school for the first time since his installation in March as Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake.

The second- and third-graders put together a beautiful Mass that included an illustrated life story of St. Francis Xavier. They also proclaimed readings related to his mission: spreading the Gospel. Before Mass ended, the bishop was presented with a special stole made by volunteers and adorned with the fingerprints of every student in the school.

During his homily, Bishop Solis explained that St. Francis Xavier was a missionary who spread the Good News of the Gospel and the students could do the same. He asked the students to remember that God loves them very much; and also asked them to share that Good News with others.

After Mass, the bishop visited each classroom. There, students shared their knowledge with him about  personification, parliamentary government, spelling, songs and fractions. In return, students got to know what a genuine and funny bishop he is – he even played piano for the music class!

Before leaving, Bishop Solis asked the students to add a prayer for him during their evening prayer.
