Bishop Solis's Thanksgiving Message
Friday, Nov. 22, 2024
By The Most Rev. Oscar A. Solis
Bishop of Salt Lake City
Greetings of Christ’s peace and love!
On Thursday our nation will set aside time to give thanks for the blessings we have received. Many of us will gather with our family members around a table to enjoy a meal and fellowship and, I hope, offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God, the source of all our blessings.
It is a time, too, when we put our Christian faith into practice by exercising charity, which we do throughout the year but perhaps particularly in this season. As Catholics we are called to reflect the heart of Jesus to the world: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, to welcome the stranger, to clothe the naked, to visit the sick and those in prison. We have many opportunities for charitable action in our own homes, in our community, in our nation and in the world. Perhaps it seems the need is overwhelming, but as Mother Teresa said, “if you cannot feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”
For some of us, this is a time of challenges, not of abundance, but regardless of our circumstances we must always recognize that God never abandons us. Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful time to attend Mass with humble and grateful hearts and offer our thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
May God bless you and all your loved ones, and Happy Thanksgiving!
