On July 22 the Cathedral of the Madeleine celebrated its patron saint with a Mass officiated by Bishop Oscar A. Solis. Concelebrating were Father Martin Diaz, the cathedral rector; Monsignor Colin F. Bircumshaw, the diocese’s vicar general; Father Jaya Kumar Penugonda, parochial vicar of the cathedral; and Father Anthony Shumway, who on Aug. 1 will become the cathedral’s parochial vicar. On that same date, Msgr. Bircumshaw’s retirement will take effect, and Fr. Penugonda will begin his assignment as administrator of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Salt Lake City. At the Mass, a relic of St. Mary Magdalene was on display for veneration as has been the tradition. Although the cathedral’s own relic was stolen several weeks ago, officials were able to borrow one from the nuns of the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery in Salt Lake City.
