SALT LAKE CITY — Bishop Oscar A. Solis is inviting everyone in the Diocese of Salt Lake City to join him in a day of reflection and prayer during the 2018 diocesan Lenten retreat, which is titled “Raise Up. Sacrifice. Offer.”

The daylong retreat on March 3 will be divided into three main components: keynote speakers in English and in Spanish, and a youth rally. Bishop Solis also will celebrate a Mass at the end of the retreat.

The Lenten retreat in English will have Fr. Dan Dorsey as the retreat master. The retreat in Spanish will be presented by Jose Antonio Medina, PhD. The youth rally, titled “Walk with Me,” will have as the presenters Fr. Sébastien Sasa Nganomo Babisayone, associate pastor of St. Ambrose Parish, and Fr. Eleazar Silva, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish.

The title of the retreats, “Raise Up. Sacrifice. Offer,”’ comes from the 2018 Lenten theme of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said Susan Northway, director of the diocesan Office of Religious Education.

The 2018 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14. Easter Sunday is on April 1.

During Lent, Catholics are asked to devote themselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, as well as “to service by almsgiving, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting,” states the USCCB 2018 Lenten document.

Each year during Lent, the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Office of Religious Education presents guest retreat masters recommended by the Congar Institute for Ministry Development, an initiative of the Southern Dominican Province that provides many of the resources for the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s lay ecclesial ministry formation program.

“This year we have chosen Fr. Dan Dorsey, a Glenmary missioner whose ministry in areas where the Catholic presence is a minority gives special insights on what it means to be a missionary disciple,” Northway said. “Dr. José Antonio Medina was chosen to present for our Spanish speakers because of his exceptional communication skills that inspire people to share the faith with others.”

Medina has a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain. In addition to teaching, he has written books on pastoral ministry and catechesis.

Attending the retreat is important for every Catholic in the diocese because “our diocesan retreat day is a time for the People of God in Utah to gather with clergy and Bishop Oscar A. Solis for a message that deepens our Lenten experience of prayer, fasting and charitable giving,” Northway said.

The retreat preparation takes a diocesan team effort to come alive.

“Directors at the Pastoral Center collaborate. The Office of Liturgy plans the Mass, which will be celebrated by Bishop Solis. The Office of Hispanic Ministry assists by helping select a retreat master who is fluent in Spanish,” Northway said.

This year the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is also collaborating putting together the rally for youth ages 13-17.

“The young people will meet in the gym at Saint Vincent de Paul School for their events and join others for Mass at the close of the day,” Northway said.

The rally will include music, talks, prayer and diverse activities selected specifically for youth, said Junuee Castro, director of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

“Coordinators of the parishes’ youth groups as well as a Junior Core team are the ones planning all the activities. … Our youth rally theme is an invitation to all the youth to begin or continue to be closer to God and together walk the path of life,” Castro said.
