Doris Rose Bertrand, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend, died suddenly November 20, 2018. She was born, along with her twin sister Delores, on April 13, 1938 to Ethel Cook Bertrand and Jerome Bertrand in Cleveland, Ohio.  

An enthusiastic and proud resident of Cleveland, Doris graduated from Notre Dame Academy and started working for the Kresge Company at the age of 16 until she retired in 1994. Some of her fondest memories were of her and her twin taking their only niece, Joan, out for movies and ice cream. She was a lover of cats, birds, “The Wizard of Oz,” anything with Audrey Hepburn but especially “A Roman Holiday,” St. Francis, and singing in the Sweet Adelines.  

Along with her sister Gloria, Doris moved to Salt Lake City in 1995 to be closer to her adored niece and her great-niece and nephews (who called her ‘Auntie Aunt’). She could always be counted on for a fun movie binge, sleepover, and to crawl her way up the stairs in the morning like a zombie, yelling “Coffee! Coffee!” to great amusement.

Doris never married but is survived by her niece, Joan Abele (Cris Cowley), and Thomas, Sarah, and Jonathan Newhall.

Her twin sister, Delores, died when they were 42 and Doris missed her every day.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Gloria Abele and her brothers Carl and Robert.

We are so thankful for the friendships that lightened her increasing physical limitations: Kathy, Sharon, Louise, Mardell and Angelica – your friendship and devotion meant a lot to her and surely to her sister, Gloria. Thank you to all her caregivers, most recently at Cascades at Riverwalk, for letting her be stubborn and making sure she always looked nice. She was always a favorite resident.

A funeral will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of life from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building.
