DRAPER — Eighth-grade students at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Middle School have a deep appreciation for rites of passage. Spring brings the promise of Confirmation and graduation, but before the sacramental and ceremonial events comes the restorative experience of performing the Living Stations of the Cross.

This long-standing school tradition, established more than a decade ago, seeks to move students beyond just the recitation of the stages of Jesus’ last days on earth. Rather, students are challenged to envision that journey from the vantage point of Jesus and all who were involved in those final days, and bring that perspective to life. Students rehearse in religion class and on their own time. Props and costumes help them dramatize the events. The end result is a solemn and moving experience for all who walk the stations. For the students, the process of this particular rite of passage resonates like no other.

This year, the Living Stations of the Cross took place April 10-11 at the Skaggs Catholic Center in Draper.
