SALT LAKE CITY — For the parish phase of the Eucharistic Revival, the Cathedral of the Madeleine has an ongoing bilingual effort that includes Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each day except Saturday.

There are four pillars for the Eucharistic Revival: reinvigorating devotion, worship of Jesus, deepening formation and missionary sending, said Jacque Smithe, a cathedral parishioner who is organizing the effort for the English-speaking community.

Plans include a Eucharistic procession for the Nov. 26 Feast of Christ the King, using the video series “Jesus and the Eucharist,” and a book study.

“We will be having small groups and discussions … and when the National Congress takes place, we plan to join the group that will be passing through Salt Lake,” Smithe said, referring to a pilgrimage group that is scheduled to visit the St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center in Salt Lake City.

“We are also going to offer a welcoming Mass,” Smithe said. The date is not yet booked, but “we hope that people will invite people back to the Church through this Mass.”

For the Spanish-speaking community, the cathedral faith leaders have chosen to study Sacramento de la eucaristía (The Sacrament of the Eucharist).

“We selected a book thinking how we can reach out to the families as a whole,” not just the adults, said Socorro Mendez, who coordinates the cathedral’s wedding and quinceañera schedule. She and her husband, Deacon Guillermo Mendez, are organizing the book study.

“If the families take this 16-page book to their homes, they are going to be able to share it with their family members, and that’s the idea,” Socorro Mendez said.

“The book is a tool to introduce people to the origin of this sacrament and to the meaning of the Eucharist,” she said, adding that the book also teaches how people can prepare to receive the sacrament.

“We think that the book is very easy reading and will really provide an inside look into the meaning of the Eucharist in our lives,” Mendez said. “It’s really important that we renew our love for the Eucharist and we keep up with the Eucharistic Revival in the cathedral.”

For the children in the catechism classes, the teachers have opted for the book Encontrando a Dios (Having an Encounter with God.)

“This is an excellent resource to encourage our children to have an encounter with Jesus through the Eucharist,” Mendez said, adding that the catechists are prepared to share the Catholic faith with their students.

“We are also having some meetings with the children and their families and talking about how to have this encounter in their lives,” Mendez said.

The cathedral also is offering a Holy Hour in Spanish every first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
