SALT LAKE CITY — With the affordability of health care among the top issues in the United States right now, this year’s Hesburgh Lecture aims to provide information on a topic of interest to many Americans.
The informal title of the lecture is “Health Care: Where are we going?,” and “We just thought that would be very interesting to the community because there are so many changes going on with health care,” said Jacqui Dimpel, a board member for the Notre Dame Club of Utah who coordinates Hesburgh lecture series.
The presenter will be Dr. Paul Bohn, a Notre Dame professor who was named one of the world’s 20 most influential analytical scientists n 2019. He will discuss “Precision Medicine – Notre Dame’s Bold Initiative to Lead the 21st Century Revolution in Personalized Healthcare.”
“Precision medicine is used to describe a dizzying array of biomedical technologies, tools and approaches targeting individuals,” states the email invitation to the lecture. “In this talk, we will discuss what precision medicine is (and is not), the relationship among information gleaned from our genes (genome), the proteins they encode (proteome), and the functions they carry out (metabolome).”
The talk also will address specific contributions Notre Dame researchers have made in developing new technology for precision health and the microbiome and human health, among other issues, the email said.
Each year the Notre Dame Club of Utah tries to choose a topic of interest to local residents to present for its annual Hesburgh Lecture, Dimpel said. Last year the lecture addressed religious freedom in the United States; in 2019 the presentation was on Catholic Social Teaching in business.
The Notre Dame Club of Utah is one of 266 around the world. “Each club serves as a local connection and extension of Notre Dame, working to advance the mission and spirit of the University in its local community,” states https://clubhub.nd.edu/page/about.
Membership in the club is not limited to Notre Dame alumni but is open to all who are interested in joining, Dimpel said. Those who attend the lecture will have the opportunity to learn about the club and “meet other active Catholics in the community that you probably have a lot in common with just from our Catholic faith,” Dimpel said.
