Bishop Oscar A. Solis celebrated a Mass Oct. 29 in the diocesan Pastoral Center in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Daughters of Charity in Utah. Present at the Mass were the four Daughters of Charity who serve in the diocese today, as well as many of the Holy Cross sisters. In his homily, the bishop said he couldn’t imagine the diocese without the sisters, and he thanked them. “Our diocese has been tremendously blessed by the cumulative years of your prayers for the salvation of souls, for your untiring work of charity, and your selfless sacrifice,” he said. He thanked them for their works of holiness and charity, especially “for your dedicated service to our poor brothers and sisters who are, in the eyes of society, the least, the last, and the lost.” He added, “I hope that your continued presence in this diocese, in this local Church and in other parts of the world will be a living sign of hope to the people, especially these days.” In comments after the Mass, Sister Martha Garcia, executive director of Give Me a Chance, said on behalf of her community that “the 100 years that our community has been here has been 100 years of solid blessings.” Shown with Bishop Solis are Daughters of Charity Sisters Milagros Federico, Lucia Lam, Martha Garcia and Germaine Sarrazin. The posters, cards and gifts are from students at Utah Catholic Schools.
