SALT LAKE CITY — The Knights of Columbus Council 602 is inviting everyone to celebrate the first Catholic Day at the Salt Lake Bees, scheduled for June 7.

“We wanted to partner with key players in the local community (like the Bees) to both provide a fun day for the Catholic community in Utah and to benefit the diocese and the Knights of Columbus,” said Cade Alcock, a Knight with Council 602 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.

The Salt Lake Bees, a Minor League Baseball team, “have been so helpful at every step of the process in making this happen,” Alcock added. “This is a wonderful opportunity to have a night out with fellow Catholics and, through the purchase of a ticket, help the Knights and the diocese with various projects, outreach and other charitable initiatives.”

If the tickets are purchased through the link https://bit.ly/4bo6mkU or the QR code at right, the price is discounted and $5 will go to the diocese and to the Knights.

At the game, Father Martin Diaz, rector of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, will throw out the first pitch.

“I am quite nervous. I hope I will not make too much of a fool of myself,” Fr. Diaz said.

He has been practicing his pitching all this month, he said. “Several people have volunteered to train me. I know I will not throw the pitch the full 90 feet,” and he is wondering how close they will let him get to home plate.

“Thirty feet would be good,” he said.

Information about the game was given during the announcements following last weekend’s Masses at the cathedral.

“This sounds like a lot of fun,” said Corina Watts, a parishioner. “I don’t want to miss the opportunity to see how Fr. Martin is as a pitcher.”

Knights of Columbus Council 602 supports the cathedral by implementing various programs throughout the year. “These include Coats for Kids, where we provide hundreds of free coats to parishioners and members of the local community, diaper drives, pancake and burrito breakfasts, Lenten fish frys, and fundraisers like the one we are doing with the Bees,” Alcock said.

Catholic Day at the Bees will end with fireworks in the park.
