Interact service club raises funds for Esperanza

Friday, May. 23, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial Catholic High School’s Interact Rotary-sponsored service club raised more than $8,000 for the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, which suffered great losses in the past few months due to heavy rain and dam failure. There have been 33 towns devastated, and aid is desperately needed.

The Interact students held an Esperanza dinner/auction at Judge Memorial April 26, to raise the money. They also organized and led a school assembly to educate the student body about the Chiapas disaster. In a show of solidarity and support, the student body had a free dress day when they did not have to wear their uniforms, but instead contributed generously to the Esperanza cause.

Members of the Hispanic Rotary Club of Salt Lake City will travel to Chiapas in June and work with a Chiapas Rotary Club to ensure that the Judge Memorial Interact funds are wisely and effectively used to relieve suffering.

This year the Judge Memorial Interact club distributed Rotary supplied dictionaries to classes in a local public school, helped to collect and distribute toys for a Hispanic Rotary-sponsored Christmas project, and sent 961 pounds of school supplies and backpacks to Saint Charles Parish School on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona.
