SALT LAKE CITY — Joette C. Patterson, 70, died Dec. 14.

Patterson was born Jan. 1, 1938, to Arthur W. Schmidt and Violet M. Rathsack Schmidt in Manitowoc, Wisc. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc in 1956, with top honors, and then graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in Biology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc., in 1960. In 1961, she met her soul mate Richard "Pat" Patterson, and they were married April 28, 1962, in Manitowoc, Wisc. They began their lives together in Brookfield, Wisc., moving to Oklahoma, Colorado, and Salt Lake City. Joette’s career as a research biologist spanned many years from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md., to the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, where she retired in July 2005. She was an active member of the Catholic Church and the Girl Scouts for more than 60 years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and welcoming them into her home which was filled with warmth, love, and laughter. She was wise, patient, and never judgmental.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters, Ann (Robbie) VanHorssen, and Colleen Patterson, Boise, Idaho; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Donald Martin, Gautier, Miss.; grandsons, Kendall VanHorssen, and Eric (Danielle) VanHorssen; great-grandson, Daniel Masterson; and many extended family members and friends.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church.
