DRAPER — Juan Diego Catholic High School’s 2012-2013 SilverLine Drill Team, competing in the 2013 Los Angeles Dance/Drill Team Nationals in Anaheim, placed first in the dance routine category and brought home the national title in the dance category March 9.

Last year the team competed in Orlando, Fla., and won the overall national title in their division.

This year, the SilverLine Drill team of 14 members competed in jazz in the dance routine category, which also includes categories such as kick, military, pompoms and lyrical.

"The competition was a lot of fun for the girls," said Brionna Anderson, Juan Diego SilverLine Drill Team coach. "It is really exciting for them to be able to compete against schools from Utah as well as other states and see what other schools are doing. Some of the schools such as Texas have as many as 85 team members and it’s exciting to watch teams that large compete. Fortunately, the schools are in divisions according to team size and we compete against schools of similar size."

The competition offers the team an opportunity to perform in front of other schools throughout the United States, said Anderson. "That way the schools from other states can go home and say the teams from Utah did this or that and looked really good," she said.

The SilverLine Drill Team started practicing for this competition during the summer, Anderson said. "Drill team is considered a sport and the girls practice mainly before school and sometimes after school."
