Kearns-Saint Ann kindergarten teacher Christina Dignam organized a personal-care item drive for the month of March. Because this occurred during Lent, the students were reminded of the three pillars of praying, fasting and giving alms; the items collected during the drive were donated to the Urban Indian Center in Salt Lake City. This not only taught religion to the students, it also taught social justice and that not all are as fortunate as others. In addition, the students, who will be future leaders, were reminded to be active participants in the community. Sean Jimerson from the Indian Urban Center said that as the weather warms, the need for personal-care items increases. The response to the project has been overwhelming, Dignam said.
