SALT LAKE CITY — During the liturgical season of Lent, Catholics are called to deepen their prayer life. Several events in the Diocese of Salt Lake City will offer just such an opportunity.

Lecture Series

A lecture series will be offered each Monday during Lent, beginning Feb. 27 and continuing through March 27.  Brandon Peterson, a professor in the University of Utah’s Dept. of Philosophy and parishioner at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, will present Why the Cross? A Choir School Lenten Series on Atonement, during which he will address questions such as “Why did Jesus die?” “What do the Bible and theologians say about the cross and human salvation?” “How does it impact our lives today?” The lecture will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each night in The Madeleine Choir School’s Erbin Hall, 205 East First Ave., Salt Lake City. Diocesan Lenten Retreat

Friar José-David Padilla, OP will present the annual Diocesan Lenten Retreat on Saturday, March 4. A specialist in practical theology, Fr. José-David will speak on the theme “The Eucharist: Becoming What We Receive.”  In an interview with the Intermountain Catholic, he said, “The celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist is a proclamation of the dynamic act of God in the life of the believers. The intrinsic union between the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist gives meaning to the concept of double nourishment from the two eucharistic tables. The commission of being sent out extends the implication of the celebration to the whole world.”

The English portion of the retreat will be from 9 to 11:45 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Parish’s Holy Family Hall, 1375 E. Spring Lane, Holladay, followed by Mass, with Bishop Oscar A. Solis presiding, then a no-cost Lenten lunch. The retreat in Spanish will be from 1 to 4 p.m.Pre-registration required; email Trisha.Norcross@dioslc.org or Jacqueline.Rivera@dioslc.org. Catechists will receive three hours of certification credit for attendance.

Presenters are Mary Hogan, a certified spiritual director, and Ruth Ann Pilney, a lay Carmelite. Both are St. George parishioners. They will speak on the Lenten Gospels. The retreat will be in the parish’s Kuzy Hall, 259 West 200 North, St. George, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check-in/brunch will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Suggested donation is $10/person.
