Dear Bishop Niederauer;

I wish to congratulate you on your new assignment and thank you for the time you have spent with us in the Diocese of Salt Lake City.  I am comforted to know that while you will no longer be our bishop you will be our archbishop.  Your leadership will continue to influence our Diocese as you assume your new assignment. 

Special thanks to you for the way in which you have assumed leadership for the entire community of Utah.  Your development of a multifaith, community-based task force to address the problems of pornography is an example of that leadership.  Such a task force moves beyond the public perception of a community that has only one influence.  It underscores the reality that we are a complex community with common concerns. 

Your public participation in a variety of venues has added dignity to community discussions involving common social and moral issues.  Your work has helped to make the Roman Catholic community a vital and important partner in the problem solving process.  We are now, as Catholics, more likely to be seen as important contributors and supporters of public policy for the common good for all people of all faiths and of all cultures. You have helped to give us a place at the table for discussions which involve complex community issues and concerns.

All too often, people work within their own groups or religious agencies.  None of us can accomplish the needs for a strong community if we are splintered.  It is through coming together that we can accomplish social change for community strength.  You are greatly respected as our leader and a leader in the larger community.  Thank you for this model as a participant and as a mentor.  We wish you well and send our prayers with you.
