SALT LAKE CITY — The Madeleine Choir school recently got a new donation, which will help with the school’s growing transportation needs.

On Dec. 4 an 84-passenger school bus arrived in Utah from Georgia for its final preparations, licensing and delivery to the school.

The donation of the bus was made possible through the David Kelby Johnson Memorial Foundation.

“The Madeleine Choir School was introduced to Elizabeth Johnson over a decade ago, when she heard the student choristers sing in the Cathedral of the Madeleine,” said Matt Kitterer, the school’s advancement director. “It was through Mrs. Johnson’s love and appreciation of the choir that the school has been fortunate enough to receive the needed funding to purchase a new bus.”

The David Kelby Johnson Memorial Foundation continues to carry out Elizabeth’s wishes to give to those in need in the name of her grandson, David Kelby Johnson, “and we are extremely grateful to have this incredible support of our mission,” said Gregory Glenn, pastoral administrator of the school, which this year celebrated its 20th anniversary.

What started as a school for grades four through eight that gathered in the basement of the Cathedral of the Madeleine now provides education to more than 400 students from pre-K through 8th grade on its own campus. Next fall, each grade level will have two classes.

“The procurement of the new bus has given the school the opportunity to strengthen its transportation system and continue to offer this service to students across the Wasatch Front,” Kitterer said.

The new bus, which can accommodate all the students in a grade level, will provide daily transportation for students, and also be used for off-site choir performances, field trips and other learning activities.

“Every one of our 400-plus students at The Madeleine Choir School will benefit from the procurement of the new bus,” said the school’s director of operations, Shaun Sparks, who is collaborating with Glenn to streamline the school’s bus routes.
