SALT LAKE CITY — Mary Thorne, J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School’s new principal, is no stranger to Utah Catholic Schools.
Thorne is a graduate of Cosgriff and Judge Memorial Catholic High School, both in Salt Lake City. She thinks her experience, both as a professional educator and as a student in Utah Catholic Schools, will be beneficial in her new career path at Cosgriff.
Prior to accepting the position as principal, Thorne was the director of student support services at the Skaggs Center in Draper. She has also worked at Saint Andrew Catholic School in Riverton.
“My journey in the Catholic schools started at Cosgriff as a student,” she recalled, adding that she never thought that journey would come full circle, bringing her back to her alma mater as principal.
“It’s kind of funny but also a great blessing,” she said adding that the great education that she received at Cosgriff has motivated her to maintain the school’s high academic standards.
“Cosgriff has always been known for its academic excellence and rigorousness, which has been a legacy throughout the years. Having experienced it myself and knowing what the Cosgriff community expects, I am able to bring that with me,” Thorne said.
As principal, she also expects to preserve the school’s community flavor.
“The school is known for its special and close community, so keeping that going and keeping a positive vibe – I love that the Cosgriff parents are very invested in their kids’ education, so keeping that up is one of my priorities,” she said.
In addition, she plans to bring in regular mental health checks for the students and for the staff and faculty.
“I think that right now this is a common issue and bringing regular check-ins for all will be very beneficial,” she said.
Thorne has an administrative background, and she hopes her overall experience at the Catholic schools system will come in very handy at Cosgriff.
“Ms. Thorne’s commitment to Catholic education, dedication and enthusiasm have been evident throughout her educational endeavors,” said Mark Longe, superintendent of Utah Catholic Schools, adding that he hopes “the fruits of the Holy Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control – continue to guide her.”
