SALT LAKE CITY — Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Salt Lake City will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on April 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Medical personnel from the nonprofit organization Comunidades Unidas will administer the vaccine at the drive-through clinic.

The vaccine will be given by appointment only; no walk-ins will be allowed.

The clinic came about when Fr. Jose Barrera Cruz, the parish administrator, approached some of his parishioners, who are part of CU, to see about the possibility of hosting a vaccination clinic at the parish.

“My priority was to keep all the parishioners safe and for them to have access to the COVID-19 vaccine,” Fr. Barrera said. “Now more than ever, keeping everyone safe and healthy should be one of our priorities.”

Among his efforts to keep parishioners safe during the pandemic have been celebrating extra Masses so that people can attend while still maintaining social distancing. The use of face masks is mandatory on all the parish property.

“We have suffered a lot. … Every life is precious. Crying at a death is not worth it just because we didn’t care or we just stopped being careful,” he said. “We all need to lend a hand for each other.”

People shouldn’t be afraid to get the vaccine, he said. “I have had my vaccines and except for a little bit of fever after my first dose,  I did not have any other effects,” he said.

Effective March 24, everyone 16 and older in Utah is eligible to make appointments to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

“Two hundred people have the opportunity to register to be vaccinated here at Our Lady of Guadalupe,” said Fr. Barrera, adding that registration for the clinic is made directly at the parish. “So far, around 100 people have registered. … We have our doors open to any opportunity to keep our community safe and healthy. We are here waiting for all and any who wants to come.”

March 31 is the deadline for registration.
