WEST VALLEY CITY — The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body of Christ, also known as the Feast of Corpus Christi, is the solemn commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist sacrament.
Because the Eucharist is the source and summit of the whole Christian life, the Feast of Corpus Christi is a celebration of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist. In many areas, the celebration involves a procession during which the Holy Eucharist is carried through the streets as people give public witness to their faith and devotion to the sacrament.
This year, the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ falls on June 11, but many parishes in the United States will celebrate it on Sunday, June 14. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parishes in Utah have been forced to use their creativity to observe this feast day.
At Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, the celebration will take place on Sunday, June 14. The devotion will consist of blessing the families with the Holy Sacrament while they are in their cars, said Father Eleazar Silva Galvan, parochial vicar.
“Corpus Christi is a very beautiful and important celebration for all the Hispanics in the Catholic Church,” Fr. Silva said.
Usually preparations for this celebration include designing and constructing a special canopy to transport the Holy Sacrament. This year a small temporary chapel is being built in front of the church for the priests and deacons to use while blessing the families in their cars.
“We will also have our parish groups supporting the celebrations, such as the Knights of Columbus, who will be having an honor guard,” Fr. Silva said.
In addition, the parish’s Charismatic Renovation Hispanic choir will sing songs of praise.
“Everyone is invited to participate in this special celebration,” Fr. Silva said.
