Happy Centennial! Ida Brunatti, a member of the Catholic Women’s League and a founding member of the Italian American Civic League, will celebrate her 100th birthday on March 19.

Newly Elected! Sister Michaela Hedican was elected 16th prioress of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn. She was elected Feb. 27 and will be installed on June 5 at Sacred Heart Chapel in St. Joseph. Sr. Michaela will replace Sister Nancy Bauer, who has served as prioress for six years and oversaw the realignment of Mount Benedict Monastery in Ogden with Saint Benedict’s Monastery in Minnesota.

Accolades for the acolytes! On March 6, Christopher Gray of the Diocese of Salt Lake City was among the 53 seminarians of the Pontifical North American College in Rome who were instituted to the Ministry of Acolyte during a celebration of the Eucharist. His Eminence, James Francis Cardinal Stafford, Emeritus Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary and former Archbishop of Denver, celebrated the Mass and instituted the new acolytes. These seminarians have now received both the ministry of Lector and Acolyte in anticipation of their diaconal, and then priestly, ordination. An acolyte is charged with assisting at the celebration of the Eucharist, purifying the sacred vessels and, when needed, to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion.

Shredding like a Pro! Talyor Shilly, a student at Kearns-St. Ann and a member of Saint John the Baptist Parish, placed 2nd in her age group in the 2011 USSA Freestyle Junior Championship in Steamboat Springs for halfpipe on March 9. At age 10, she was the youngest to compete in the national championships. She also competed in the Slopestyle event.

The World is a Stage! Juan Diego Catholic High School students raked in the medals at the region drama festival on March 5. Erik Tita and Guy Todaro took 2nd place in Pantomime; Gabbi Lemanski was 2nd in Dramatic Monologue and Micaela Mannix placed 3rd in Musical Theatre. In Humorous Monologue, Lauren Rathbun took 1st place and Savannah Leslie, 2nd place. Qualifying for state in Contemporary Scenes were Abby Moore, Colby Hill, Matthew Illario, Cody Thompson and Landon Sadler; in Humorous Monologue were Lauren Rathbun and Savannah Leslie; in Dramatic Monologue, Susan Fynbo, Gabbi Lemanski and Libby Petereit; in Musical Theatre, Micaela Mannix and Kelsey McGarry; and in Pantomime, Erik Tita and Guy Todaro.
