Performing Arts Class presents ?Bugsy Malone' + Enlarge

DRAPER — Performing on stage as a middle school student takes not only courage and confidence but some smarts as well. You’ll need a little going into this class and will gain much by the end.

Performing Arts Class at Saint John the Baptist (SJB) Middle School combines all of the arts, including Music, Dance, Theatre, and the Visual Arts and culminates in a play production at the end of the semester. This past November, the students performed Bugsy Malone, a musical by Alan Parker very loosely based on events in Chicago, Illinois in the Prohibition era around the 1920’s. "The plot of Bugsy Malone concerns the manufacture of a brand of custard, which is used first in cream-topped pies (being hit with one in the face "kills" the character) then later in "splurge guns" that enable the dessert to be deployed on an unprecedented level." (source: Wikipedia)

Studies demonstrate students involved in theatre exhibit higher self-esteem, build social skills, display better study skills, and consistently perform higher on standardized tests. The Performing Arts Class at SJB introduces students to varieties of drama, with an emphasis on developing their communication skills through singing, improvisation, play building, dramatic forms, scripts as texts for performance, technical aspects of production, experience of dramatic presentation, discussion, reading and writing about choir, drama and theater.
