Teaching students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse is standard curriculum at Saint John the Baptist Middle School during Red Ribbon Week, the last week in October each year. The campaign is a unified way for communities to take a stand against drugs and show intolerance for illicit drug use and the consequences to all Americans. Each day of Red Ribbon Week took on a different look for the students. Monday’s theme was "Be REDdy To Say No To Drugs" and students wore red shirts. Tuesday was "Being Drug Free Is No Sweat" and students wore sweatpants and tops. Wednesday was "You’re Crazy If You Do Drugs" and students wore crazy hair or hats. Thursday was "Team Up Against Drugs" and students wore their favorite team jersey. Red Ribbon Week also provided middle school students the chance to show off their artistic talents through the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest. The contest encourages students to develop an original poster and slogan idea designed to discourage their peers from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. There are two categories in the contest: Alcohol Awareness & Abuse and Drug Awareness & Abuse. Judging is based on how clearly the theme is communicated by the slogan, how well the visuals convey the message, and how effectively the poster captures the judges attention and causes them to reflect on the topic. This year, 68 middle school students participated in the contest. Eighth-grader Vincent Nguyen was the first place winner in the Alcohol Awareness & Abuse category and seventh-grader Perri Cook was the first place winner in the Drug Awareness & Abuse category. They are scheduled to compete at the state level in January. If successful at the state level, Vincent and Perri will progress to the international competition.
