SALT LAKE CITY — “Be Still and Know,” a women’s retreat, is being planned for Saturday, May 19 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

“This is an uplifting retreat for all women by women,” said Jeanne Lachowski, one of the organizers. “We’re hoping women from all over the diocese will attend.”

The theme “Be Still and Know” (Psalms 46:10) “gives us the surety of the strength and faith of God. I picture him speaking as a father to a child: comforting and loving,” said Maria Devereux, the co-organizer. “We chose this theme to encourage ladies to, in this hectic world, slow down and listen to God’s voice; to know God better.”

The all-day event will feature presenters from parishes all across the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Devereux is from St. Mary Parish in West Haven, Lachowski and Cecilia Tonna are from St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center in Salt Lake City, and Carol Ruddell is from St. Thomas More in Sandy. Bonnie Nell from St. Ambrose Parish in Salt Lake City is organizing publicity for the event. Jane Gormally from St. Mary of the Assumption in Park City will provide the music.

“The music will be uplifting, contemporary Christian music that we can sing with and prayerfully meditate to, as well,” Devereux said.

Presentation subjects will include “The small still voice,” “Ways that God speaks to us,” “What are you looking for?” and “Who am I?” Each of the presenters will illustrate how God is using a particular verse of Scripture in her life.

They also will each share a personal reflection or story along with an activity.

The retreat will include times of contemplation and meditation, as well as time to interact with other women.

“Retreats are wonderful,” Devereux said.”Along with being faith-filled, they can also be fun.”

Organizers encourage women to bring their friends, mothers, sisters or daughters and enjoy this time to reconnect with each other and the divine.

“When you also bring family or friends, it can be a nice bonding time,” Devereux said.

Participants need not be Catholic; the retreat is Scripture-based and “as women of faith, we are all on the same path,” Lachowski said.

“Through retreats like this we get to know each other better as women,” Devereux said.  “Our common belief in Christ helps us encourage each other. We also hope to have a lot of fun things – relaxing activities as well as serious worship.”
