Saint Joseph Elementary School hosted a family math evening on Oct. 8, during which a variety of “I Spy”-themed math activities were provided at all levels from preschool to seventh grade.
Approximately 300 people attended the adventurous evening of math and “I Spy” fun.
During the evening, students had to solve mystery math story problems using all math operations. At some stations, students had to “spy” the answer using a variety of math manipulatives.
When students solved the mystery math problem, they were awarded a gold coin to put into the spy bag. Then they received the clue to their next station.
Eighth-grade honors students ran the stations, each of which was decorated according to a theme that matched the problem at that station.
The math night reinforced the importance of math in the students’ everyday activities.
St. Joseph Elementary teachers play a vital role in teaching the fundamentals and shaping their students’ positive attitudes toward math, which leads to the students’ ultimate success.
The night also provided fun ideas for parents to incorporate math in family games at home.
