RIVERTON — The 4th-grade students at Saint Andrew School traveled north to the Great Salt Lake for a field trip on Sept. 10. The day was filled with hands-on discoveries, as the students had many opportunities to experience the Great Salt Lake, from using binoculars to bird-watch from the causeway to collecting specimens from the lake and identifying the different metamorphic stages of the brine flies. The fourth-graders also found brine shrimp and noticed if they were female or male by looking for egg sacks. Most students tasted the indigenous pickle weed and everyone completed a science experiment with the oolitic sand and vinegar. Throughout the day, they were repeatedly asked to hypothesize and think like a scientist. In addition to the water activities, the class also watched a strolling coyote and several grazing buffalo.
