Student goes to Amazon Jungle on humanitarian mission

DRAPER — Jarad Davis, a junior and President of the Juan Diego Catholic High School Interact/Rotary Club, was accepted into the YouthLINC program to participate in a humanitarian mission in the village of Santa Rosa in the Amazon Jungle of Peru in June 2008. The international service experience includes involvement in construction projects to better the lives of people in under-developed nations, teaching at primary schools, participation in a health education lessons, and other medical activities under the mentorship of American medical personnel accompanying the trip. Along with this, there will be cultural exchange activities with local students and individuals of all ages, and other activities needed at the international site.

Students accepted into the program make a commitment to volunteer between 60-100 hours in their local communities. Jarad Davis has been fulfilling his obligation by volunteering at Discovery Gateway. In addition to his community service, Jarad has been active in the JDCHS Interact/Rotary Club – a partnership with the Draper/Riverton Rotary Club. Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The Juan Diego student-driven club has raised money for Polio vaccinations for third world countries as well as delivered over 100 hand-made blankets to the Linus Project for Primary Children’s Hospital. In addition, Jarad was selected to represent Juan Diego at Utah’s RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) conference in October 2007. The three-day conference was held at Sundance Lodge and was attended by more than 120 high school junior and senior students from all over the state.
