At left, Simon helps Jesus carry his Cross, the fifth station, is found in St. Peter Church, American Fork. Realizing Jesus would not be strong enough to take his cross to Golgotha quickly enough for the Roman guards who led him there, they pressed a bystander, Simon of Cyrene, to help carry the Cross. At right, from St. Francis of Assisi Church in Orem, comes the sixth station entitled Veronica wipes the Face of Jesus. Although it does not appear in any Gospel account of the Passion of Christ, popular Christianity holds that after a woman named Veronica wiped the face of Jesus, an image of his face appeared on the cloth.
