Two from Judge Memorial will be recognized as 'Women of Distinction'

SALT LAKE CITY — The Consociates Auxiliary of Assistance League of Salt Lake City will honor two "Women of Distinction" at their annual Champagne Brunch at the Cottonwood Club on May 3. This year’s honorees are Linda Simpson and Evelyn Sadler.

Simpson is a Judge Memorial Catholic High School English teacher; Sadler is a liaison for Judge Memorial and the Jordan School District for Operation Healthy Teeth and also is the director of Education Support Services for six Title I schools in the Jordan District.

The women were nominated for the award and submitted a biography and resume. Considerations for the award were made based on employment or service, publications, innovation, organizing efforts, exceeding industry, community, or education standards, mentoring, advocating, training, expertise and skills, according to the assistance League nominating process.

Consideration also was given if a nominated person overcame a hardship or personal barrier that limited access to opportunities or success, personal transition or personal growth; and if the individual held offices in leadership or advocacy groups within a community, teaching role or as a role model.

Sadler helps identify children in need at the Jordan District schools for the programs the Assistance League provides. Her time spent volunteering in an orphanage in the Republic of Kiribati and Guyana, where the needs of children were most critical, gave her the life skills that have made her an invaluable asset in the Jordan School District community as she provides for students and families in need, according to the Assistance League, which nominated her.

Simpson was nominated by Cece Holt, an Assistance League member, for her ability to inspire and motivate students, her ability to serve as a mentor and role model for students and fellow teachers, her positive attitude, and the manner in which she treats all students, parents and fellow teachers.

Simpson has the "enthusiasm and positive attitude, gusto and stamina that are lacking in education these days," said Holt. "She is gifted with the ability to teach literature and writing, but above and beyond teaching skills, she motivates students to use those skills to expand their own creative pursuits. Certainly her film classes have motivated a number of students to pursue careers in film production."

Simpson is always willing to mentor younger teachers, said Holt. "Simpson works cooperatively with fellow teachers for cross-curricular projects, always willing to try something new and different. As moderator of Judge Memorial’s literary magazine, Catharsis, she works side by side with students each year, helping them to produce a magazine that is always of superior quality. Her smile and laughter endear her to all."
