FILLMORE — "The youth from Holy Family Mission in Fillmore spent four days having good Catholic fun June 19-22 at Vacation Bible School.

"They are on a treasure hunt seeking the greatest treasure of all – God’s love," said Mary Fasig," director of the Diocesan Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office. "We are using "Son Treasure Island," which is Vacation Bible School educational material. The kids have learned God’s love is for everyone, and God’s love is caring even for people who make us angry, or people others do not care about.

Each student received a T-shirt® printed with an abridged version of the bible verse (Cor 13:4-8) "Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, it does not boast. Love is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking."

"We want the children to have a positive experience, so we make it special by having decorations, games, a craft, and snacks," said Fasig. "I’m surprised there were so many kids here."

Word of mouth was the advertising tool. There were two children in attendance the first day when Vacation Bible School began at 1 p.m. By 1:30 p.m. there were 13. The second day there were 26 children, and on the third day there were 43.

"Because this is a mission, the age range is pre-kindergarten through grade 12," said Fasig. "It is amazing how well they interact. A lot the these kids are cousins."

The mission trip to Fillmore also included a youth group from St. James Parish, Vernal, and high school youth ministers from St. Rose of Lima Parish, Layton, and St. Henry Parish, Brigham City. The group stayed at St. John Bosco Mission in Delta where they earned service hours doing projects such as weeding gardens, planting flowers, and washing windows.

The youth ministers said they enjoy participating. They put on a skit each day to educate the children with a Bible story, helped with the games and crafts, and helped prepare the snacks.s
