Bishop Solis' Easter Message

Bishop of Salt Lake City

Greetings of the risen Christ’s peace and love! We celebrate Easter this year at a very crucial time. Many nations are battling the ill effects of climate change, mass migration, hunger and poverty. War is raging in some parts of our world, resulting in horrific devastation, loss of many innocent lives and millions of displaced people seeking refuge in other countries, while the rest of their population is wallowing in a quagmire of untold suffering and uncertainties. In addition, Easter comes at a time when much of our world seems to be rebounding and returning to normalcy after two years of misery due to the pandemic.

Amidst global fear, we can notice the arrival of spring, with the plants and trees waking up from the dead winter weather and bursting into new life. Fresh flower buds and leaves are slowly sprouting under the warming rays of the sun. God’s creation is unfolding the beauty of Easter: rebirth, renewal, a fresh beginning.

The resurrection of Christ reminds us of the greatest news of our salvation and the foundation of our faith. Christ has risen and he is alive! He rose from the dead to give us new life. The tomb cannot contain the power of God. He cannot remain in the coldness and darkness of the tomb because death has no final say over life. No matter what, God’s goodness and love will always prevail.

This is the glorious and comforting message of Easter – Christ bringing new life out of death, transforming doubt into faith, turning sadness into joy and darkness into light so we can live, love and hope again. Hence, let us open our hearts and allow God to breathe new life into us, to reinvigorate our confidence and trust in the Lord so we may once again proclaim the glorious truth of Christ’s death and resurrection.

As we celebrate Easter, it is important to keep our faith strong and maintain our hope during these trying times. Saint Pope John Paul II once said, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are Easter people and hallelujah is our song.” Let us allow the light of Christ to shine and permeate every aspect of our lives. May the Risen Lord be with you always and fill you with joy, hope and peace!

Happy Easter!
