SALT LAKE CITY – On Dec. 10, young adults from throughout the Diocese of Salt Lake City are invited to join Bishop John C. Wester for an Advent Mass. The event will take place at Saint Catherine of Siena/Newman Center. It will be followed by a light dinner. The diocesan Youth Ministry is organizing this event, which will be bilingual. Samantha Almanza, the Youth Ministry director, invites all those 18-35 years old to the event, saying it will be a great opportunity to continue the preparation for the Advent season. "We want them to attend the diocesan retreat and also this event to which every youth and young adult is invited – single, married, it doesn’t matter, because we want them to know that they can bring their kids," said Almanza. Advent is the season of preparing and "this is a way to celebrate Advent together with the community and together with our bishop, celebrating Mass," said Almanza. She emphasized that today’s society tends to put a lot of emphasis on Christmas, "but in the secular traditions of it, Santa Claus and buying presents, a lot of focus on materialism; but Advent really is a preparation for what Christmas is really about," said Almanza. "When we come together for an Advent Mass as a community, we are acknowledging that right now, instead of focusing our time on making sure that our loved ones have whatever they have on their Christmas list, we want to focus on the real preparation for the coming of the Savior."
