SANDY — "Celebrate in Grand Style with the Red, White & Blue" was this year’s theme for Blessed Sacrament Catholic School’s Grandparents’ & Grandfriends’ Day, held Oct. 3. Approximately 275 grandparents and grandfriends attended this 6th annual event.

The grandparents were invited to the All School Mass, toured the school, spent time in the classrooms, and ate lunch with their grandchildren.

Grandparents who attended the event traveled from as far away as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and California.

For the event, the gym was transformed into a patriotic sea of red, white, and blue.

The school choir, under the direction of Laura Thomas, entertained the visitors until the tours began.

Linda McCaffrey, grandmother of 6th-grader Isabella McCaffrey, said she enjoyed her time at the school. "It was wonderful sharing with the students. Mrs. Serzen, 6th-grade teacher, was wonderful. She commended the 6th-grade class and said that in her 20 years of teaching this is the best class she has ever had. She let us share our 6th-grade experience of 60 years ago with them. The students were amazed that we didn’t have cell phones or use calculators during math."

Marcy Mullholand, art teacher, had all students create special refrigerator magnets to present to their grandparent or grandfriend during their visit to the school.

"I Love Grandparents’ Day! I really enjoyed meeting so many of our visitors, several who came great distances to share this day. The children were very excited to have their guests see their school. The pride in their school they showed was amazing," said Principal Bryan Penn.

A highlight of the All School Mass was the formal introduction of the kindergarten class to the congregation by their 7th-grade buddies. This formal introduction is part of the school’s Community of Caring program and character education initiative. The kindergarten students feel a connection to the community and become part of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic School community. This year’s event was definitely a "Grand Celebration!"
