Catholic diocese offers condolences on the death of Elder Scott

Friday, Sep. 25, 2015

Dear President Monson,
On behalf of the Catholic community of Utah I want to send our condolences on the death of Elder Richard G. Scott. We are truly saddened by the announcement of his death. He was a true Christian gentleman who had profound influence on members of your church as well as on the wider world community. On various occasions we felt his kindness and his respect for those of us from other religious denominations. In his presence we always felt welcome.
In any gathering Elder Scott reflected a joy that truly came from his heart. Where others too often experienced darkness, he saw challenges with opportunities, especially in his care for others. He was, indeed, a man filled with the hope that we could make life better for others and in doing so impact our world. As a dedicated family man, Elder Scott understood the importance of family life and was quick to defend its integrity. No doubt his children have benefited from such a loving father.
Please extend our sympathy to the family of Elder Scott, to the other members of the First Presidency, to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and to the other General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Archbishop John C. Wester, presently attending the meeting with Pope Francis in Washington, D.C., sends his sentiments as well. All of us have lost a cherished friend and, the community, a dedicated leader.
All of you will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
Sincerely yours,
Reverend Monsignor Colin F. Bircumshaw
Diocesan Administrator of Salt Lake City
