Catholic school students shine at Salt Lake Valley science fair

SALT LAKE CITY - J. E. Cosgriff Memorial School students brought home a lot of trophies from the 2010 Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair on March 26. There were 160 projects submitted to the Junior Division, which include 7th and 8th graders from the Salt Lake, Tooele, Granite, Park City, and Murray school districts.

Seven of the eight Cosgriff students who attended the fair placed in their category, bringing home 13 individual awards. The following students placed first or second in their categories:

Victoria Landa-Steinau, 1st place Chemistry; William Cisneros, 2nd place Chemistry; Michael Kearns, 1st place Earth and Planetary Science; Erin Villareal, 1st place Environmental Science; Connor Morgan, 1st place Microbiology; Gilliam Young, 2nd place Microbiology and Jackie Morgan, 1st place Plant Science.

In addition to placing in their categories, four students received the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Award, given to the top 10 percent of scores in the Junior Division. Two students received special awards. Jackie Morgan was invited to compete in the Roots and Shoots Environmental Science Fair sponsored by Westminster College and Syd Austin received a special award from the United States Army, recognizing scientific thought and process skills.

Kearns-Saint Ann School also represented the diocese well and at the state fair. Michael Draper, an 8th-grader participated, Nicholas Allred, a 7th grader, placed first in Physics and Astronomy, and received Special Awards from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and U.S Marine Corps, American Institute of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Award, and the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Award.

John Loras, a 7th-grader, was invited to the Roots and Shoots Environmental Science Fair.
