Each year the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Commission for People with Disabilities recognizes individuals with disabilities who themselves are strong witnesses to their Catholic faith, as well as those who seek to include everyone, including people with disabilities in active parish life.
Three people in the diocese were selected to receive the 2015 Catholics Can Award. They are Delfina Cook of St. Rose of Lima Parish (see story, left), Cheryl Heyborne of Christ the King Parish, and Monsignor Michael Winterer, a retired priest of the diocese who is in residence at St. Ann Parish.
Heyborne, who is blind, has served as the organist at her parish for more than 20 years, memorizing the music so she can play it during the Saturday evening Mass. In addition, she is the chairperson for her parish’s Catholic Women’s Council. She “is truly an ambassador of love and ministry,” according to her award nomination.
Msgr. Michael Winterer has served in more than 25 of Utah’s Catholic parishes and missions since being ordained in 1960, as well as serving various diocesan roles, such as vocations director and retreat master. He retired in 2011, but continues to do “what needs to be done and filling the need where it’s seen,” according to his award nomination.
Heyborne will be presented with her award on Oct. 18 during the 9 a.m. Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church, 690 S. Cove Drive, Cedar City. Msgr. Winterer will receive his award on Oct. 25 during the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church, 450 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City.
