DRAPER — Do you remember attending math class in your earlier days, learning all kinds of math equations, earning good grades, but wondering "What the heck am I going to use this stuff for?" Some of us are still wondering. But at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Elementary School there is a new math program that is meaningful, varied, rich, and rooted in real-world problems and applications. It is called "Everyday Mathematics" and was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) to enable children in elementary grades to become life-long mathematical thinkers. In pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms, teachers and students review the math material together, followed by a break-out session where students work together on a game or project that reinforces the material in a real world way. A sampling of units from the second grade text book include; Temperature Changes, Making Change, Clock Skills, A Shopping Activity, and Mental Arithmetic: A Basketball Game. "I like the math boxes" says third grader Avery Fries. "We take time in class to solve the problems in the math boxes so we understand." Saint John the Baptist Catholic Elementary School is located in Draper, Utah at 300 East 11800 South.
