DRAPER - Fifth-grade students at Saint John the Baptist Elementary School experienced "fatal vision" during their D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) class on April 23.

Sergeant Pat Evans from the Draper City Police Department brought the "fatal vision" goggles and allowed each student to try them out. The goggles are designed to impair the vision in a similar fashion to being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

As the students wore the goggles, they were challenged to walk a straight line, catch a ball, pitch the ball into a basket, and drive a remote control car through warning cones.

The fifth-grade students will graduate from the D.A.R.E. program on May 25. Evans teaches the program and visits the students once a week for eight weeks.

The program covers the following curriculum: Healthy Decisions, Tobacco Facts, Marijuana Facts, Alcohol Facts, Friendship Foundations, Peer Pressure, Ways To Be In Charge, Personal Pressure Situations, Cool Things To Do, and Your Body.

The D.A.R.E. curriculum challenges students by having them participate in active learning. The benefit to the students is a strong foundation of decision-making skills that they apply to real life situations about the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and inhalants.
